Winds of change

I moved out from Istanbul Turkey, into Warsaw Poland.
The plan is to live in Warsaw for 2 years.

The last 2 months have been crazy with a lot of stuff to do, traveling between 3 countries and moving stuff, rearraging houses, etc.
Now things start to settle and I finally have the oportunity to get to know Warsaw and Poland.

Turkey is still in my thoughts, I allready went to some turkish restaurants over here and talked a bit of turkish there. It seems there is a big comunity of turks in here so I guess I ll be able to keep practicing the language and be in touch.

Warsaw is so different from Istanbul, it feels like a different world. But all nice, I feel it as a friendly place.

Brokeback Mountain is 18+ in Turkey

Yesterday I decided to go watch the best director awarded movie Brokeback Mountain, here in Istanbul.
I was surprised to see the 18+ and sexual content rating warnings in the entrance. I thought "am I in the right place?"
Turns out that the movie contain few and not explicit at all sex scenes, and the rating reason is that the movie describes an homosexual love. Here's what The Turkish Daily News says about it (must register to read the whole story...):
Even though no trailers have been screened in Turkish movie theaters, everyone had some idea about “Brokeback Mountain.” Following heated arguments for the last couple of months, the movie is finally on our screens, with an 18+ rating. It was assumed by our higher board of censorship that concepts like terrorism, racism, murder and being a geisha were not alien to our traditions, but the love story of two ranch hands constituted some sort of danger to our moral values. It was deemed invisible for some time. But after winning over 50 awards, including four Golden Globes and three Oscars, “Brokeback Mountain” has taken its place quietly on a limited number of screens in Turkey today.

This movie is a great one, I give 9 in 10 stars! A great love story!

Jornalinho 106

I was very surprised to find a blog written in turkish mentioning Jornalinho, specifically the issue 106.
Jornalinho?! Isn't that a portuguese tv show for kids from the 80's?! How did it get to a turkish kid's blog?!
Then I googled it I found that this story has been around for a while, many sites tell it and they reference jornalinho issue 106. I found the story in many different languages, I still don't get how the text became so famous!
So here's the story in english for you to read, via:
In issue nr. 106 of Jornalinho, (Portugal), I find a story which teaches us much about that which we choose without thinking:
One day, a calf needed to cross a virgin forest in order to return to its pasture. Being an irrational animal, it forged out a tortuous path full of bends, up and down hills.
The next day, a dog came by and used the same path to cross the forest. Next it was a sheep's turn, the head of a flock which, upon finding the opening, led its companions through it.
Later, men began using the path: they entered and left, turned to the right, to the left, bent down, deviating obstacles, complaining and cursing - and quite rightly so. But they did nothing to create a different alternative.
After so much use, in the end, the path became a trail along which poor animals toiled under heavy loads, being forced to go three hours to cover a distance which would normally take thirty minutes, had no one chosen to follow the route opened up by the calf.
Many years passed and the trail became the main road of a village, and later the main avenue of a town. Everyone complained about the traffic, because the route it took was the worst possible one.
Meanwhile, the old and wise forest laughed, at seeing how men tend to blindly follow the way already open, without ever asking whether it really is the best choice.

Nostalgia

Eis o meu best off:
  • Bic Laranja Bic Cristal!
  • Quitoso
  • Tom Sawyer
  • Os Amigos do Gaspar
  • Verao Azul

E agora pude finalmente ouvir a versao original!

Meeting people on the plane

Everytime I board the direct flight between Istanbul and Lisbon I wonder about the lifes of all passengers. I don't go through all of them but I start conversation with some. Here is the list of people that happened to sit close to me:
  • A famous (in portugal) brasilean soccer player that is doing trainings in the south of Turkey
  • A portuguese man that works for a portuguese company with business in Turkey
  • 3 turkish students that were heading to Porto for ERASMUS
  • A turkish man that works in Porto in the business of turkish carpets
  • Some elder portuguese people that were heading to Israel through Istanbul

Because there are so little (or so I think) it is a great excitment to find people that have connections to Portugal and Turkey.

Unfortunately I couldn't find any portuguese living in Turkey. Besides me I only know 2 portuguese in Istanbul.

My turkish language status

I just finished the 5th level of the turkish language school Dilmer

I had a result of 91% in the exam. For the Dilmer standards it's an average grade.
I feel that this month in the school was well invested time and money. I learned very usefull grammar, that I had been using for a while but without knowing very much how it worked.
Also it was a good month of practice of talking and reading newspapers. The teacher was not the best I had there, he didn't push us very much, but he was very available to answer any questions, and he knew a lot about etymology, it's allways interesing to learn how words and expressions evolved to be like they are now (ex: Portakal).

2 months ago I posted about my skills after the 4th level.
Interestingly enough, before I felt I was better speaking than understanding, and now I feel the opposite. I feel more and more that I get most of what people are saying but I can't keep up with the conversation speed when talking. Also, I have been watching more turkish television without feeling completely lost (by the way I must write about some of the shows I get to watch!). Reading is still hard, I should focus more on turkish written blogs.

It's time to go back to work full time and and push the wheels of turkish economy a little more!

Agora vou voltar a trabalhar a tempo inteiro.

Pandora still the best

I blogued about Pandora before.
It's a great place to go when you want to listen to music for free, easy and fast.
You create a station with a song or group and Pandora plays musics belonging to that group or other musics that are similar to it.
Also, it has a very cool interface!
